The developers behind Path of Exile have expressed their sincere apologies to fans of the original game.

In a recent video, Jonathan Rogers, the game director of Path of Exile 2 and co-founder of Grinding Gear Games, shared insights on the current situation. He mentioned that the original Path of Exile team was reassigned to focus on refining the endgame content for Path of Exile 2 in preparation for its December release, with the expectation that they would return to finalize update 3.26 afterward.

Unfortunately, the complexity of the issues facing Path of Exile 2 proved to be more than anticipated. “We were fooling ourselves,” Rogers reflected. Alongside the delay of Path of Exile 2, there were significant challenges such as crashes and balance issues that demanded immediate attention.

“How could I justify taking some of our most skilled developers off a project that is in turmoil?” Rogers questioned.

As it stands, the Path of Exile 1 team will remain dedicated to Path of Exile 2 until version 0.2.0 is released, and likely for a few weeks beyond that. “Regrettably, I can’t provide a specific timeline at this moment,” he concluded. Currently, Path of Exile 2 is at version 0.1.1.“I truly apologize for how everything unfolded,” he expressed. “In hindsight, I should have anticipated that reallocating the Path of Exile 1 team would result in this situation, and I likely should have fought against that decision. Throughout the process, I kept telling myself that we had time, but eventually, that time ran out.”

“We have much to learn about managing two games at once. Our confidence was misplaced. We still need to refine our studio’s structure to accommodate this dual development. However, we do have a strong strategy in place for the upcoming 3.26 update.”

The anticipation for the early access launch of Path of Exile 2 finally concluded with its release on PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X and S on December 6, 2024. It achieved remarkable success, becoming the 15th most-played game on Steam.
